What this Kona coast snorkel trip is

Four hours. One boat. One reef. The crew leaves from Kailua-Kona and runs the coastline south to Kealakekua Bay, the snorkeling ground most Big Island regulars name first when you ask them where the water clears.

The cruise down is half the fun, honestly. Dolphins turn up often enough that nobody on board is surprised anymore. Humpback whales pass through when they’re in season. There are sea caves carved into the lava, and stretches of shoreline where ancient Hawaiians made their own history and left the legends that still get told to kids and to visitors who come back year after year. Once you reach the bay, mask, snorkel, fins and a flotation device are handed out, and the guides are just as comfortable with total beginners as with people who have been swimming since childhood. Lunch is served on the water, with bottled water and snacks available throughout.

Prefer to stay dry? A ride-along option covers the same coastline and the same lunch without the swim. Tickets are mobile or paper, and booking is instant.

How the four hours run

1. Meet at Harbor Drive

Turn into Harbor Drive and drive straight ahead roughly a quarter mile. The public bathroom with the red roof is your landmark, and the crew meets you right in front of it. Give yourself a buffer for parking.

2. Cruise the Kona coastline

The boat works its way along the coast while the captain keeps an eye out for marine life. Dolphins are the frequent sighting. Humpback whales appear seasonally. Sea caves and historical areas where ancient Hawaiians lived and left their legends sit along the route, and the guide talks through them as you pass.

3. Snorkel the Kealakekua Bay reef

Arrival at the bay means gear on and into the water. Masks, snorkels, fins and flotation devices come with the ticket, and the guides stay with the group the whole time. Suitable for all experience levels, including first-timers.

4. Lunch on the bay

Sandwiches and fresh fruit, served while the boat sits in one of the calmest, clearest spots on the island. Bottled water, light refreshments and snacks are on board too. If you keep to a specific diet, pack your own food to be safe.

5. Return run to Kailua-Kona

Back along the coast and back to the meeting point. Total time on the water runs about four hours, so a morning departure leaves your afternoon wide open.

Before you step on board

  • Motion sickness: not many visitors realize how much a morning pill helps. Take it in the morning and at least an hour before the tour starts.
  • Weather: this is the tropics, and conditions change without warning. Bring a layer you don’t mind getting wet.
  • Open ocean: the boat operates on open water, and the surface is not always glassy. Travelers should be at a moderate fitness level.
  • Not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or anyone with poor cardiovascular health.
  • Not included: hotel pickup, towels and sunscreen. Bring your own. Service animals are welcome.
